Rafael Sánchez and Lourdes Sánchez Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1960 and 1961 respectively, Rafael and Lourdes are siblings that migrated to the United States with their family in the wake of the Cuban Revolution of 1959. They settled in Queens, NY, and later in New Jersey. Though having independent artistic trajectories, they find common ground through a shared mental library of early childhood imagery and the imprint of the diaspora experience. They also share a closeness to the hands-on industrial work of their father and the can-do, make-it-with-my-own-hands ethos of their mother.
Lourdes Sánchez works primarily in ink and watercolour on paper, which she uses to create compositions that are equal parts geometric and organic. She worked as surface-print designer for many years, and her work appeared on clothing, swimwear, home furnishings, shoes, accessories, packaging, posters, greeting cards, candy, CD covers, and many book covers, often through Penguin Random House UK. Eventually, she left the design field to focus entirely on fine art. She lives and works in Newburgh, NY, and Mérida,Yucatán, and is represented by Sears Peyton Gallery in New York and Los Angeles.
Rafael Sánchez is a visual artist based in New York City. Citing drawing as primary, themes of transformation and transcendence evolve through an intuitive use of diverse materials, sites, and situations. A theatrical aspect runs throughout the work, lending itself to interplay and collaboration. Presentations have occurred in dental clinics, churches, swamps, lakes, and parking lots, as well as theaters, galleries, and formal institutional settings. Rafael operates a bookstand in front of his West Village apartment that is an extension of his practice, and he cares for the estate of Kathleen White, his partner and collaborator who predeceased him in 2014. He is represented by Martos Gallery, New York.
